Don't Make These Classic Errors
Amsterdam is one of Europe's most visited cities, and that popularity means there are well-worn tourist traps and avoidable mistakes that catch out almost every first-timer.
1. Not Booking Anne Frank House in Advance
The Anne Frank House sells out weeks, sometimes months ahead. If you arrive at the door without a ticket, you won't get in. Book the moment you know your travel dates.
2. Staying in the Red Light District
Budget hotels there look cheap online but the area is loud all night and not particularly central for sightseeing. Stay in Jordaan, Canal Ring, or De Pijp instead.
3. Walking in Bike Lanes
The red paved lanes beside roads are bike lanes, not pedestrian paths. Step into one without looking and you'll have a very angry cyclist heading straight for you.
4. Taking Taxis Instead of Trams
Taxis are expensive. Trams are frequent, cheap, and cover the whole city. Get an OV-chipkaart on arrival and use it for everything.
5. Visiting in Summer Without Booking Everything
July and August are absolutely packed. If you must go then, book accommodation, museum tickets, and restaurants weeks in advance.
6. Assuming All Coffee Shops Sell Coffee
A 'coffeeshop' in Amsterdam is a licensed cannabis retailer. If you want a regular café, look for 'koffie' on a sign or ask for a 'café' or 'eetcafé'.
7. Ignoring the Neighbourhoods Beyond the Centre
Noord, Oost, De Pijp, and Oud-West all have brilliant food, local bars, and cultural venues with barely a tourist in sight. Take a ferry or tram and explore.
