Everything you need to know before your first visit to Amsterdam — from which areas to stay in to what to skip.

Before You Go

Amsterdam is a compact city and incredibly walkable. You won't need a car — in fact, a car will make things harder. The city runs on bikes, trams, and its famous canal boats.

Which Neighbourhood to Stay In

For first-timers, the Jordaan or Canal Ring (Grachtengordel) areas offer the best combination of central location, charm, and access to main sights. Budget travellers often choose Oud-West or De Pijp.

Getting There

Schiphol Airport is 20 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal by direct train, running every 10–15 minutes. Buy an OV-chipkaart for all public transport — it works on trains, trams, metro, and buses.

Must-See vs Skip

Must-see: The Anne Frank House (book months in advance), Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and a free city walk through the Jordaan. Consider skipping: Heineken Experience (overpriced), Madame Tussauds, and the Red Light District if you just want to take photos — it feels exploitative and locals resent it.

The Dutch Way

A few cultural notes for first-timers: cyclists have absolute right of way — always check for bikes before stepping off a pavement. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Most locals speak excellent English but will appreciate a 'goedemiddag' (good afternoon) or 'dank je wel' (thank you).
