Can You Travel Amsterdam on a Budget?
Yes — but it requires some planning. Amsterdam is one of Western Europe's more expensive cities. Accommodation is the biggest cost. But food, transport, and sightseeing can all be done cheaply if you know how.
Free Things to Do
- Walk the canal ring — one of the world's great urban walks, completely free
- Vondelpark — Amsterdam's beautiful central park with free concerts in summer
- NEMO rooftop terrace — free to access and has great city views
- Begijnhof — a hidden medieval courtyard open to the public at no charge
- Street art in NDSM Wharf (North Amsterdam)
Museum Tips
The I Amsterdam City Card gives unlimited museum access and free public transport. For stays of 24–72 hours, it often works out cheaper than buying tickets individually. Under-18s get into most Amsterdam museums free.
Eating Cheaply
Albert Heijn supermarkets have excellent, cheap sandwiches and salads. Street food at markets (Albert Cuyp, especially) is far cheaper than restaurants. Indonesian warungs in De Pijp offer generous portions at very fair prices.
Accommodation
Stayokay hostels offer clean, central dorms from around €35/night. Alternatively, staying slightly outside the centre (Sloterdijk area, reachable by train) cuts hotel prices significantly with a short commute in.
