Autumn in The Hague: Through the Eyes of a Local

There’s something magical about autumn in The Hague. As a local, this season is my favorite time to explore the city—when the air turns crisp, the trees transform into fiery hues, and the city takes on a soft golden glow. Here’s a personal walk through some of my favorite autumn spots in The Hague.

The First Crunch of Leaves

I start my morning in the Haagse Bos, a forest right in the city. The ground is scattered with orange and gold, and each step releases the unmistakable crunch of dry leaves. Breathing in, the air smells earthy and alive. Runners and dog walkers nod as we pass, everyone bundled in scarves and jackets.

Lange Voorhout: Golden Canopy

Mid-morning, I head down to Lange Voorhout. The avenue is a glowing tunnel of yellow, and sunlight filters through the linden branches. Artists set up easels, painting the scene; a couple sits on a bench, reading. There’s a quiet buzz, but the overall feeling is calm and contemplative. I pause for a coffee at a nearby café and watch the leaves drift by the window.

City Sights in Autumn

Walking towards the Binnenhof, the historic parliament complex, the reflections in the Hofvijver pond are particularly stunning at this time of year. The trees along the water seem to double in the glassy surface, making the scene feel almost dreamlike.

Favorite Autumn Activities

  • Collecting chestnuts with my kids in Westbroekpark.
  • Stopping for hot chocolate after a museum visit (see my favorite spots in this article).
  • Watching the sunset at Scheveningen beach, when the crowds have thinned and the sky turns pink and gold.

Why Visit in Autumn?

  • The city is less crowded, so you can truly soak in the atmosphere.
  • Many parks and avenues are at their most beautiful.
  • Cafés and restaurants offer special seasonal menus—think pumpkin soup and spiced pastries.

Final Thoughts

Autumn in The Hague is about slowing down, taking in your surroundings, and enjoying simple pleasures. Even as a long-time resident, I never tire of the colors and calm that the season brings. If you’re visiting, be sure to carve out time for a long walk and experience the city through local eyes.
