Skip the Prinsengracht crowds and discover the quieter, more authentic side canals that real Amsterdammers actually walk along.

Beyond the Tourist Canals

Amsterdam's famous ring of canals — Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht — draw millions of visitors each year. But walk just a few blocks in any direction and you'll find yourself on streets that feel utterly different.

Egelantiersgracht

This narrow canal in the Jordaan neighbourhood is one of the most photogenic in the city, yet rarely crowded. Line up your shot from the bridge near the Claes Claesz Hofje almshouse early in the morning.

Brouwersgracht

Often voted Amsterdam's most beautiful canal by locals themselves. The wide water, converted warehouses, and lack of tourist boats make it feel like a different city entirely.

Realengracht (Western Docklands)

Head out to the old Western Islands district and you'll find three interconnected man-made islands — Realeneiland, Bickerseiland, and Prinseneiland — full of converted warehouses and houseboats, almost entirely free of tourist crowds.

When to Visit

Early morning (before 9am) or early evening (after 6pm) is when these streets feel most magical and least busy. Weekdays are significantly quieter than weekends.
